The peace camp
When I was invited to the Peacecamp I had no idea how it would be. I have never thought it would be as it was. The Peacecamp was definitely an amazing experience which I will never forget. At the beginning, the Peacecamp seemed to be a great trip to Austria with some of my best friends, nothing more. The first time I realized that it was going to be much more than a simple trip to another country was in the first group meeting and in the following evening. It was the first time ever I could just sit and talk to a girl, about my age, who lives in the same country I do, and who came with the Arab group. For the first time I had the opportunity to be and speak with an Arab teenager and get to know the Palestinian culture. I asked my questions and got answers. in Israel it could never happen but Austria gave us a neutral territory and freedom to speak our minds. There were also European groups. It was very fun to meet teenagers from other countries. I always tried to think: what do people from abroad know about the situation in Israel? In the Peacecamp I got my answers. For the first time I talked about the war in 2006. In Israel if you speak about the war everyone has their own experience from this summer but with the Europeans I could share my feelings and my experiences. All of this was brought to discussion only because of a fire alarm that we heard which was just like the one that was heard during the war in Israel. The singing, dancing and hanging around together was so much fun, and demonstrated the fact that teenagers all over the world have mutual interests and actually enjoy the same things. The Peacecamp was great! I hope I will have the chance to meet all my new friends from Austria, Hungary and the Arabs. If we could live in harmony for 10 days, why can't the world?

Vom 15. bis 25. Juli 2006 fand in der Waldviertler Gemeinde Franzen peacecamp 2006, das fünfte peacecamp dieser Art, statt – eine multikulturelle Begegnung von Jugendlichen aus vier verschiedenen Kulturkreisen. Dieses Friedensprojekt der Psychoanalytikerin Evelyn Böhmer-Laufer, das israelische und palästinensische Jugendliche mit Gleichaltrigen aus Österreich und Ungarn zusammenbringt, ermöglicht diesen, Aspekte ihrer Identität und politischen Realität zu reflektieren und über lang bestehende, oft unlösbare Konflikte kreative Brücken zu bauen. Das peacecamp-Projekt wurde bereits zweimal als Dokumentarfilm auf die Leinwand gebracht. Walter Wehmeyer hat es 2004 für seinen Film Naher Osten – Hoffnung und Trauma der Jugend (Produzent: Petrus van der Let) aufgezeichnet. Der Filmemacher Georg Geutebrück hat auf Augenhöhe mit den jungen TeilnehmerInnen Peacecamp 2006 begleitet und dieses Erleben in seinem Film The peacecamp Experience festgehalten. In Memoriam Leon Zelman, der sich unermüdlich für die Begegnung Jugendlicher diverser Kulturen und Religionen einsetzt , zeigen wir eine ORF X-Large Reportage, die Franz Gruber mit Frédéric G. Kaczek 1993 in Israel gestaltete.


peacecamp 2006 - the fifth of its kind - took place in Franzen, Lower Austria, from July 15th to July 25th 2006 with youth from Israel, the Palestinian territories, Austria and Hungary. This initiative of the psychoanalyst Evelyn Böhmer-Laufer brings together youth from different partly conflicting cultural environments, enabling them to reflect aspects of their identity and to find creative ways to bridge over their diverging, often conflicting, personal, as well as political realities. Two documentaries have already been made about peacecamp projects: in 2004, director Walter Wehmeyer (Producer Petrus van der Let) shot his film Naher Osten – Hoffnung und Trauma der Jugend. Filmmaker Georg Geutebrück's The Peacecamp Experience accompanies the process at eye-level with peacecamp-participants and tells the story of their similarities and solidarity, in spite of the political walls which stand between them. In memoriam Leon Zelman, who worked tirelessly for the encounter of young people of various cultures and religions, we show an X-Large ORF reportage, that Franz
Gruber and Frédéric G. Kaczek shot 1993 in Israel.

Seit 2004 finden in Österreich und Israel multikulturelle Begegnungen mit Jugendlichen statt. Sie sollen dabei die Kultur-, Lebens- und Leidensgeschichte der jeweils Anderen kennen lernen und Formen kooperativen Miteinanders erproben. Von Kunstpädagogen angeleitete Kunst-Workshops, gruppendynamische 'mission impossible'-Spiele, psychoanalytische Grossgruppen, Teamsupervision und ein Abschluß-Event vor einem 'echten' Publikum bilden die Hauptpfeiler dieses Zusammenkunft.
Ulrich Kropiunigg (Medizinische Universität Wien) und Birgit Pabst (Öst. Stiftung Weltbevölkerung) haben das Projekt wissenschaftlich evaluiert und kommen zu dem Schluss: 'peacecamps bauen Vorurteile ab, stärken das Selbstwertgefühl, erhöhen die Bereitschaft, Tabu- und Konfliktthemen auf verbaler Ebene auszutragen und sind ein wertvolles Instrument der Erziehung zum Frieden'.

Betweeen October 25th and 27th, my husband Ronny and myself visited the Jewish and the Arab delegations of peacecamp 2007. We were hosted by the principal of Zvulun High school in Kibbutz Yagour, met her assistant Hila, Osnat Oknin and Dr. Silvio Gutkowski, who had come from Jerusalem in order to participate in this reunion.

On the next day, we traveled to nearby Nazareth: we were greeted by Arab delegation to peacecamp 2007 , youth and adults: all the young Jewish and Arab peacecamp-participants had come, but also Nazira Taha and her husband, and Mr. Faisal Taha, the principal of the Galil High School of Nazareth. We were guided through Nazareth, visited the Museum of Antiquities and were shown very interesting and beautiful items that illustrate the history of Nazarath and its inhabitants.

This was a great opportunity for the Jewish and Arab participants to meet again after the peacecamp-experience of the summer, and to spend a most interesting and inspiring day together.

Another reunion of the two delegations will take place very soon in Jerusalem: Dr. Silvio Gutkowski invited the youngsters to participate in a conference on psychic trauma which is about to take place in Jerusalem in November: arrangements were made between Dr. Gutkowski and the group leaders of both groups for a joined trip to Jerusalem and the presentation of the peacecamp-project at the conference.

ATSMHI, eine Vereinigung spanisch und portugiesisch sprechender Psychologen und Psychiater in Israel, veanstaltet vom 13. - 15.11.07 in Jerusalem ein Symposium zum Thema "Psychisches Trauma". Silvio Gutkowski, Vorsitzender der ATSMHI, wird dort einen Vortrag namens "Konflikt und Aussöhnung" halten, in dem er über das peacecamp 2007 berichten wird, bei dem er als Gruppentherapeut tätig war.
Alle jüdischen und palästinensischen TeilnehmerInnen
von peacecamp 2007 werden bei dieser Veranstaltung anwesend sein und über ihre Erfahrungen am peacecamp berichten.

All Jewish and Palestinian participants of peacecamp 2007 will be present and give their personal account of their experience at peacecamp.
